Black Hollyhock Alcea rosea blossoms are a powerhouse for natural dyeing and botanical printing. These dramatic, near-black flowers yield rich purples, teals, periwinkle blues, grays, and greens depending on your modifiers.

Grown organically on my small homestead in West Virginia — harvested by hand as the blossoms mature and darken, then carefully solar dried. No sprays, no chemicals.

Excellent for botanical printing (bundle dyeing) and Eco-printing. Also works for immersion dyeing, inks, and watercolors.

Using as Natural Dye & Botanical Printing
Black Hollyhock blossoms are a very concentrated dye source, especially prized for botanical printing / bundle dyeing.

Best Use – Botanical Printing (Bundle Dyeing):
  • Use the dried blossoms whole for large dramatic prints or gently pull them apart for smaller, more detailed prints.
  • They can be used fresh or dried.
  • Excellent on silk, wool, and cotton.

Recommended Amount:

Start with 5% Weight of Fiber (WOF) for medium to rich color (e.g., 5 g blossoms per 100 g fabric). Use more for deeper saturation.

Color Possibilities (with modifiers):
  • Alum → purples, lavender, periwinkle blue
  • Iron → grays, teal, slate
  • pH modifiers (vinegar or soda ash) → greens, brighter blues, or softer tones

Colorfastness:
Moderate to good. Colors may gradually shift toward gray with repeated washing or strong sunlight exposure. Botanical printing helps extend the beauty of the color compared to full immersion baths.

Immersion Dyeing:
Cover blossoms with water and soak overnight. Simmer gently (160–180°F) for 45–60 minutes. Strain, add pre-mordanted fiber, and simmer/steep. Best results come from short dye times and overnight cooling.

Additional Uses:
  • Create natural inks, watercolors, and paints for fine art.
  • Wonderful for solar dyeing and Eco-print experiments.

Tips for Best Results:
  • A little goes a long way — these are concentrated.
  • Experiment with mordants and pH for unique shifts.
  • Store dried blossoms in a cool, dark place until ready to use.

Garden & Harvest Notes
I grow these striking, tall hollyhocks because they add gothic drama to the garden and are beloved by pollinators. I harvest the blossoms as they mature and darken (rather than when fully spent), then solar dry them for year-round use. While you enjoy these dried blossoms, plant the future — my Black Hollyhock Flower Seeds are ready for your garden! Grown chemical-free in a messy, biodiverse homestead landscape that supports beneficial insects.

Feel good knowing you’re getting non-GMO, homegrown flowers. I work with Mother Nature, not against her — no sprays or treatments of any kind.

There is no better way to make your stand against GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) than to grow your own heirloom flowers and veggies by saving the seeds and passing them on. Don't let Bayer/Monsanto take over our food!

Shipping Note:
Flowers may get crushed in shipping. Dried flowers are fragile and although I package as carefully as possible, they are susceptible to shedding or bits breaking off. Please handle with care.

To maintain beauty and color, keep out of direct sunlight and humid areas.

Zero Waste packaging. These dried flowers are hand packed in small, lined Kraft style bags. What I ship in will depend upon the items in your order. I most often re-use boxes. I also use new shipping materials. I cannot guarantee that the shipping materials will be Zero Waste. But they are likely to be given a second life by me. If the packaging is not damaged, you too can continue the trend by giving the packaging another life.

Images may vary slightly due to different devices and lighting. I also include watercolor-style photos because I love art — I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
