Marigold dried flowers for use in immersion bath dying, Eco-printing, and/or pigment making. Dried marigold flowers achieve vibrant earthy yellow-oranges and yellow-green colors on natural fibers. Greens are best achieved by adding a bit of iron to sadden the color.
- Qty: Approx. 1 or 2 ounces loose whole Colossus Red Gold and Orange French Marigold Blossoms (T. patula)
Marigolds are a beacon of light in the garden. I grow them mixed in with my heirloom tomato plants. The bees and other beneficial insects absolutely love marigold plants. I must always be careful during my hand harvesting to avoid disturbing the varied pollinators as they fly from flower to flower.
Highly concentrated, marigold will produce strong colors in a 1:2 ratio (dried flowers:natural fiber), but may also produce progressively lighter shades as the dye exhausts.
Process:
You should use at least 20% WOF (Weight Of Fiber) for a soft yellow. If you want a darker shade, add more or for a lighter shade, use less. Adding iron or shifting the PH will produce deep greens or yellow-oranges. Experimenting is part of the fun!
You must use mordanted cellulose or protein fabrics. The Marigold flowers can also be used for Eco-printing to create lovely botanical imprints on scarves, fabric yardage or garments.
Please consult your favorite resources for more detailed instructions on dye processes, scouring, mordant fixing, fiber finishing/washing, and safety measures.
