Using plant dyes is very enjoyable and satisfying but does require some degree of experimentation to get the desired coloration of your fibers, yarns and fabrics. Results also depend on the type, weight and make-up of the fiber, and water quality, temperature and length of time in the dye bath among many other factors. The type of mordants, dye assists and modifiers will also affect the resulting color of your dyed materials.
Onion skins create a spectrum of colors from yellow to golden brown to greenish, depending on what else is used with them. Nontoxic mordants such as salt, vinegar, baking soda, and using an aluminum or cast iron pot will create different colors. Fastness varies. The color will fade over years with exposure to light and washing, however it will persist, though less intense.
It is always recommended to first wash the fabric prior to dyeing, and when using cotton, an aluminum (Alum or Aluminum acetate) based mordant generally results in better dyeing effectiveness. It should be used at a range of between 10-20% weight of fiber (WOF) depending on intensity of the desired color.
My natural plant dyes are derived from botanical sources, and are both sustainable and ethically produced. They can even be used for naturally coloring handmade soaps and candles. Infuse the dye powder in oil or wax, before adding to your soap or candle recipe.
This onion dye is supplied in 1 ounce re-closable kraft bags which should be sufficient to dye up to 100g of fiber depending on how intense you want the color to be.
Not a commercial product. Color of ground skins will vary.
Please store your dyes out of reach of children, pets, and sunlight. Store under dry conditions.
