If you want to grow your own Madder Rubia tinctorium, you need to plan ahead by at least three years to get the best color from the roots. The three year old roots are best used as a dye, if dried first. Then, to use as a dye, crush or break them up as much as possible and soak in water and heat, to make a dye bath. Madder can even be used as a light fast dye without the need for an aluminum mordant. You can use a tannin with your madder root instead.

Madder, or Dyer's Madder Rubia tinctorum is classic dye plant in the coffee family. The roots typically produce deep reds and burgundy shades. Plants are perennial and seeds have a prolonged germination time of up to one month. One must be patient while these seedlings get started.
The leaves and stems of Madder plants tend to lightly cling when you brush over them. They have very strong growing roots that spread. The tops of the plants will also sprawl in sticky low lying vines. This can be considered an invasive plant depending on your growing goals and conditions.
Roots are typically harvested for dye purposes in their third year of growth.
Feel good knowing you are getting non GMO seeds grown in a natural chemical free environment. I intermingle all my crops creating a messy but beautiful landscape. I believe this attracts a larger variety of bugs, helping to keep any one species from overtaking.
NO! sprays or treatments, even the organic approved types. I work with Mother Nature, not against her...
There is no better way to make your stand against GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) than to grow your own heirloom plants by saving the seeds and passing them on. Don't let Bayer/Monsanto take over our seed supply!
I have included watercolor art of some of my product pictures simply because I enjoy it. I hope you enjoy it as well.
