Elecampane (Inula helenium) is a very hardy perennial herb with aromatic roots traditionally used in herbal preparations and natural dyeing. The roots produce a rich gray color on wool when simmered. The plant is also a beautiful addition to the garden with its large, showy green leaves and tall yellow flower stalks.

Growing Instructions
Natural Dye & Herbal Uses
Pound fresh or dried roots and simmer for a rich gray dye on superwash Merino or other wool. The roots have a distinctive aromatic scent (some say reminiscent of men’s cologne). A classic old-world herb plant.

Grown in a natural, chemical-free environment. I intermingle my crops to create a messy but beautiful landscape that attracts a larger variety of beneficial bugs and helps keep everything in balance.

- Plant seeds after danger of frost or start indoors in potting soil for better germination control (warmth + moisture helps).
- Full sun to part shade; thrives in better soil but is tough enough for poorer, drier spots.
- Grows large and luxurious with good sun and soil — up to tall flower stalks the second year.
