Black Knight Scabiosa, Pincushion Flower Scabiosa atropurpurea. This deep purple variety is great for Eco-printing and immersion dye baths. These potent little dye flowers work best on pre-mordanted natural and protein fibers such as wool, silk, and cotton. Depending on mordant choice and acidity of the dye bath, colors range from slate grey-blue and green, to saturated tones of teal, to purple and pink.

Dyeing with Dried Black Scabiosa

Gather Materials
  1. Dried Black Scabiosa flowers
  2. Fabric (preferably natural fibers like wool, silk, or cotton)
  3. Large non-reactive pot
  4. Wooden spoon
  5. Non-reactive tongs

Mordanting
  1. Soak your fabric overnight in a mordant solution (like alum) to help set the dye.
  2. Rinse the fabric before dyeing.

Dyeing Process
  1. Create the Dye Bath
    • Place about 20 dried Black Scabiosa blooms (1oz/28g) in a pot of water.
    • Boil for about 10 minutes until the water changes color.
    • Strain the dye liquid and return to the dye pot.
  2. Dye the Fabric
    • Reduce heat to a simmer 140°F (60°C) and add the mordanted fabric.
    • Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the desired shade is achieved, generally 30-60 minutes.
    • Allow the fabric to cool in the dye bath before rinsing and drying.

  3. Rinse and Dry
    • Once the desired hue is achieved, carefully remove the fabric using tongs.
    • Rinse in cool water and hang to dry.

Color Variations
  • The dye from Black Scabiosa can produce different shades based on the mordant used and the pH of the water.
  • For example, using an alkaline modifier can shift the color towards green, while an acidic solution can yield pink hues.

Tips for Best Results
  • Experiment with different mordants and modifiers to achieve a range of colors.
  • Keep in mind that Black Scabiosa dye is not as colorfast as some other natural dyes, so it may fade over time.
  • Bundle dyeing techniques can help concentrate the dye and resist fading better than immersion dyeing.

Color fastness: good.

This method allows for creative exploration with natural dyes, making it a fun project for textile artists and hobbyists alike.  This definitely isn’t a dye to use on items whose color you want to survive for generations.

If you are new to plant dyes, I highly recommend the following books:

These flowers, like all my flowers, were grown on my small Eco farm homestead without any pesticides, fungicides, or insecticides (not even the organic OMRI approved types). I believe in working with Mother Nature, not against her.

All the flower heads have been hand harvested and solar dried by yours truly.

Note: Flowers may get crushed in shipping. Dried flowers are fragile and although I package as carefully as possible, they are susceptible to shedding or bits breaking off. Please handle with care.

To maintain beauty and color, keep out of direct sunlight and humid areas.

Zero Waste packaging. These dried flowers are hand packed in small, lined Kraft style bags. What I ship in will depend upon the items in your order. I most often re-use padded mailers. I also re-use boxes when needed. I also use new shipping materials. I cannot guarantee that the shipping materials will be Zero Waste. But they are likely to be given a second life by me. If the packaging is not damaged, you too can continue the trend by giving the packaging another life.

Images may appear different on different devices and screens. I also like to provide some artwork photos of my products simply because I enjoy art so much. I sincerely hope you enjoy these photos as well.
