The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days

The JJ Virgin Diet Cook Book. Here we give a brief review of just how useful or not this book may be if you decided to follow the 7 foods 7 pounds in 7 days diet hype.
Good Information, Greedy Author
The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days by JJ Virgin

First things first, if you are looking into this book because loosing weight fast is your one & only goal, then give this a pass. The author is very misleading in her claim you will simply & easily drop seven foods & drop seven pounds in a mere seven days. There is nothing easy about The Virgin Diet. I want to make that very clear. That said, my reason for getting the book was less about loosing weight & more about food intolerance.

There are a lot of very good points & plenty of good advice for trying to root out your food intolerances. Removing potential problem foods entirely from the diet & slowly re-introducing them back in one at a time is not anything new, but it is sound advice for those who don't already know. I had every intention of following the plan to rule out digestive issues & hopefully find some peace with my digestive system. Unfortunately following this plan is virtually impossible because it calls for her high protein shake two times a day & even incorporates the shake powder into snacks & treats. I am not against shakes. I happen to use Amazing Grass Original & Field of Greens (both are certified organic with no natural flavors). Edit 12/6/20: Amazing Grass contains guar gum which is a gut irratant. I no longer consume either of these products or any products like this. Instead I opt for real whole foods, not powders.

My problem is The Virgin Diet shakes themselves. The author is vehement (rightly so) about keeping the seven foods 100% out of the diet. One of these is sugar. Well sugar is in her shakes! I find it hard to take her "diet" seriously when her own products that she shamelessly promotes contain the very ingredients she says must be entirely avoided! Not only that they contain "flavors" what are these "flavors?" You do not get full disclosure as to what it is you are putting into your body. That hardly seems like a good plan if you are trying to determine if you have a food intolerance. Aside from that her shakes are very expensive.

I am in full agreement with her instructions to consume only grass feed organic meats, organic veggies etc. But her own products are not even certified organic. I just have to shake my head in frustration. I really believe that in the mess of self promotion, "go to my website for more information rather than put it in the book", "drink my shakes two times a day" garbage, that there is good advice mixed in with all her money grabbing gimmicks. By the way you have to sign up to access her website. If you want to buy her products, you don't have to sign up though!

There are a lot of other books available regarding food tolerances &/or digestive health:  The Body Ecology Diet, The Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Nourishing Traditions, The Beauty Detox Solution, Digestive Health with REAL Food & many more.  If you are looking to heal your body I recommend reading other books on the subject before reading this book. This is just the wrong book to start with when struggling with the complexities of digestive issues.

Back to the weight loss. If you don't give a fart about food intolerance & just want to loose weight already! Just substitute two meals a day with a nutrition shake (Edit 12/6/20: hopefully you can find one without sweetners, gums, & flavors. You might want to try making your own veggie smoothies instead of powdered shakes) & eat a small dinner. You will lose the weight. You don't need this book & $60 bottles of shake powder to loose weight. A food diary (mentioned in this book) is a great option too. Don't lie, after all you are only cheating yourself.

Do you dream about living the simple life? Your own idyllic farm where the cows moo and the veggies are the best you've ever eaten? I've got a surprise for you, homesteading isn't easy! Join me at my small eco family farm where we stumble often, and learn as we go. This is indeed the good life, but it is also a very hard life that only rewards for that hard work... or not! Back to the land, it's tough and I love it.Hi there! My name is Jen. I'm a "tree hugging dirt worshiper" who has been organically farming for nearly two decades. It never ceases to amaze me at how much I've learned & how much I am still learning. I have studied natural health, nutrition, & herbs for nearly three decades. Our health & the natural world around us are connected in ways we don't often realize. How we treat the land & animals directly affects us in both body & mind. My goal is to provide others with truly natural humane goods from my own little piece of paradise, & to freely pass along whatever knowledge I pick up along the way. I am grateful every day to be able to have such a worthwhile & fulfilling job surrounded by the beauty & unpredictability of Mother Nature.
