Excellent Advice, Poor Execution
Beyond Sugar Shock: The 6-Week Plan to Break Free of Your Sugar Addiction & Get Slimmer, Sexier & Sweeter by Connie Bennett

Once you get past the silly terminology you will find that buried beneath is a book filled with very good information. I guess the author was trying to act like the readers friend rather than an author. In this way the book is an epic fail. While I enjoy many a silly moment, I do not care for the juvenile way the book is written.

First let's start with the cover featuring what to the majority of Americans is the most tempting bit of bliss their eyes can behold; sweet sprinkle laden cupcakes. 🧁 Every time you pick up the book while fighting your sugar addiction you are greeted with this reminder of what you are giving up.

Inside the book there are many stupid terms such as giving yourself a more "sweeterlicious" life!  Now if sweets are bad then we don't want to say our life is sweet. Isn't that like saying our life is bad? The author uses many references like this that had me literally lifting my eyes from the pages so I could roll them to the heavens.

In the beginning of the book there is a quiz for you to determine if you have a sugar problem.  I found the quiz to be lacking. I know I have a sugar problem. The quiz said I did not have a problem. 🤣 What went wrong were the answer options. Most did not fit my lifestyle & I had to pick the closest one. Also the quiz seems more focused on dieting rather than sugar. I am not dieting. I don't all have a weight issue. A person does not have to have excess weight in order to have a sugar problem. I know plenty of folks with excellent figures who eat horribly.

There are also many plugs throughout the entire book that get tiresome fast. Plugs to go to the authors website or Facebook page. Plugs about the school she attended. Name dropping.  It's like the author felt that she would not be taken seriously if she didn't continuously name drop & let you know her pedigree.

If the author simply avoided all plugs & silly wording the book would be darn near perfect!  She is dead on in nearly all aspects of the dangers of sugar. She gives mostly sound advice about what we need to eat (an example of what I don't agree with is her recommendation of Canola oil. Canola oil is very unhealthy.  It comes from the rape seed plant, is nearly always genetically modified & bad for your cardiovascular system. There are plenty of healthy options available leaving no reason to recommend or consume Canola. This review will never end if I go on about Canola, so I will leave it up to you to research it further if you wish.)

If you can manage to push through the nonsense language you will find a book loaded with factual information & very good tips & advice to help you kick your sugar addiction. Some of the tips she give may seem silly (such as picking out your power song & singing it (out loud or in your head) when you feel the urge to consume sugary products. Quote, "...boogying to your Woo-Hoo, Feel-Good Theme Song every day & doing the Success Strut". While the way the book is written is silly, advice to do silly things is very healthy for everyone young & old. So whatever you do, please do something silly as often as possible. If it doesn't help you kick the sugar habit, it will help boost your mood. 🌞

The general idea is to follow her week by week plan to help you prepare yourself to get off of sugar for good so you can finally live a life free from the damages of sugar. She gives menu ideas & suggestions as to what foods are healthy as well as many tips on how to boost yourself mentally & physically. If you are Vegan you will not like this book as the author strongly recommends consuming animal protein. One of the most simple ways to help fight your sugar addiction is to eat animal protein when you have a sugar craving. Sugar truly is bad for us.  Even too much fruit is bad, esp fruits high in fructose.  The more proteins & veggies we have in our diets the healthier we will be. Her advice is very similar to a Paleo lifestyle.

I sincerely hope that if you want to kick sugar out of your life for good, you find the tools that you need to win. Sugar is not easy to quit. There is no reason not to use the tips in this book to help you on your journey, just keep in mind that you must wade through some pretty nonsensical language to get to the good stuff.

Do you dream about living the simple life? Your own idyllic farm where the cows moo and the veggies are the best you've ever eaten? I've got a surprise for you, homesteading isn't easy! Join me at my small eco family farm where we stumble often, and learn as we go. This is indeed the good life, but it is also a very hard life that only rewards for that hard work... or not! Back to the land, it's tough and I love it.Hi there! My name is Jen. I'm a "tree hugging dirt worshiper" who has been organically farming for nearly two decades. It never ceases to amaze me at how much I've learned & how much I am still learning. I have studied natural health, nutrition, & herbs for nearly three decades. Our health & the natural world around us are connected in ways we don't often realize. How we treat the land & animals directly affects us in both body & mind. My goal is to provide others with truly natural humane goods from my own little piece of paradise, & to freely pass along whatever knowledge I pick up along the way. I am grateful every day to be able to have such a worthwhile & fulfilling job surrounded by the beauty & unpredictability of Mother Nature.
