Fortify Your Life: Your Guide to Vitamins, Minerals, and More
We've been fans of Low Dog ever since reading her book Healthy at Home: Get Well and Stay Well Without Prescriptions. We prefer to use herbal medicine & whole foods to stay healthy but like many we do still take the occasional supplement. Prior to herbal methods we had an entire shelf filled with supplements of every kind you can think of. Eventually after hearing the negative reports on the news about supplements & the questionable additives & fillers we decided to cut them out almost entirely. Thanks to this new book by Low Dog we can sort through the noise & figure out what is right for us. She even explains about fillers & additives. She says what she feels is safe & what she feels we should avoid.
This is not a book you can blow through. You will want to read it and re-read it & refer to it again & again. After reading we looked into supplements we thought might be useful to me but found ourselves once again feeling overwhelmed by all the options. The solution now is to pick up this book & re-read what we're looking into. This has been so helpful to us in making decisions about our health. We have learned that we likely get the majority of the nutrients from our diet (We don't eat the typical American diet. We eat those "icky" things like beef liver, organ meats, egg yolks, pasture raised meats, cooked spinach, use cast iron, consume herbs, full fat raw dairy, etc.) yet even though our diet is considered more nutritional according to Low Dogs book, we did discover that we can benefit from supplements in some areas. One easy example is we should probably supplement with calcium. Apparently we are not getting as much as we thought. This one is an easy one, we ordered Adora - Calcium Supplement Dark Chocolate. No pills to swallow & no fighting to get anyone to take their vitamin.
A downside to the book is Low Dog doesn't give any recommendations to brands. So you really do have to do your homework & research to figure out what works for you personally. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as all of this research & re-reading only enforces the information making you a better educated consumer.
Low Dog also provides charts to assist you with various medical conditions & supplement recommendations as well as possible drug (prescription & non) reactions.
Overall this is a very balanced book. Integrated medicine is truly a wonderful balance between conventional & non conventional treatments. We wholeheartedly agree that we need to try something less invasive first before going to more extreme measures regarding our health. Our favorite Dr. was integrated. At the time we didn't grasp all of it as we were still very young. But it was that Dr. & no other that actually helped us heal & unbeknownst to him, led us towards a more holistic lifestyle.
