The very basic information regarding which bacteria are good, which are bad, the various types of bacteria, the health benefits of eating probiotic rich foods & some of the recipes are what make this book worth having mostly for quick reference.
The author is an MD (a Gastroenterologist). We don't have a lot of faith in conventional medicine. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of information that was given not related to pushing pills. However any time eating probiotic rich foods is mentioned it is typically followed up by saying that it is impossible to acquire enough probiotics to be beneficial by eating probiotic rich foods alone. The author then recommends taking various supplements & raves about all the new probotic products on the market plus the endless possibilities for more. One example is tampons. Women can easily treat vaginal infections by using real live yogurt. The easiest way is to dip a tampon into live yogurt & insert it before bed. In the morning remove it. No mus. No fus. Dr. Shekhar recommends using probiotic tampons instead. We ask why? So we can spend more money? It is unnecessary. In today's world we are led to believe that we need packaged products to treat ourselves rather than utilizing what nature provides us with in affordable abundance.
Another issue we have is with the authors insistence that we must have prebiotics in order for our probiotics to be able to do their job. This is only necessary if you are taking probiotic products rather than doing it the old fashioned way & consuming probiotic foods! The food product contains the prebiotics naturally. This is just another money grab by greedy corporations. As most of us know, doctors get plenty of kick backs from manufactures for promoting & using their products.
To be fair if you are not going to take control of your life & allow companies to supplement you, than you probably need bottles of supplements & prebiotics. Just remember that no quantity of probiotics is going to truly help you if you treat your body like crap.
If you culture your own foods at home & eat plenty of them we see no reason why you could not consume enough beneficial bacteria for good health. A proper diet does not require supplementation.
There are some decent recipes at the back of the book taken from The Body Ecology Diet & Wild Fermentation among others. The yogurt recipe provided was lacking. It was your typical recipe requiring heat. There are many different types of yogurt that you can culture at home that don't require heat! You let them sit out at room temperature.
We highly recommend Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon before you read this book. Have fun with Wild Fermentation next. Get Probiotics for Dummies last as a quick source of reference.
