The Salmon Sisters: Feasting, Fishing, and Living in Alaska by Emma Teal Laukitis and Claire Neaton
This book has been a pleasure to read and use. I loved reading the little stories behind the Salmon Sisters lives growing up at Stonewall Place, near the Aleutian Islands. I devoured every photograph, drawing and map with avid curiosity. To me, our current Alaskans are our modern day Northmen or what many think of as Vikings thanks to the cold hard living they must endure.
The recipes are amazing. I do have make swaps because I have Autoimmune disease and follow an AIP diet to deal with inflammation, but even so, the recipes turn out great. I was never a fan of fish and had no experience cooking it. Many years ago now, when I realized I needed to be eating more fish for my health I sort of winged it. I always kept it simple. Bake my fish on a bed of sliced lemons, sprinkle with sea salt and a dab of butter or now, more recently butter flavored coconut oil by Nutiva thanks to my newest problem, an intolerance to the protein in dairy (oh the irony seeing how I own pasture raised Jerseys).
I feel we owe a big Thank you for many of these recipes as many were passed down from the locals and have now been made available to all. Most, but not all of the recipes are for meals utilizing fish and other sea critters. If you are a parent of sourdough starter, you're going to love the recipe for Sourdough Chocolate Cake. I was also very surprised and delighted to discover a wonderful Lemon Meringue Pie recipe. Eggs (again, I have my own organically fed pastoral hens, so yeah, more irony) are something I'm not supposed to really eat but I do indulge on occasion, mostly just the yolks as they are less allergenic, but this pie. Oh my, this pie. I make my own crust, follow the filling recipe with a switch to tapioca starch rather than cornstarch. So very very good and it's all mine because nobody else likes lemon meringue on my homestead! Lucky, lucky me. 😋
To put it simply, if you enjoy eating from the sea and also love reading back to the land types of books, you will surely love this beautiful book as much as I do.
