Farm Anatomy Activities for Kids: Fun, Hands-On Learning by Dawn Alexander
As a full time Eco farmer, I'm grateful to books such as this. Hopefully parents will read this along with their kids because many seem to be in as much of a need of a farm education as their children; sometimes more so if I go by the conversations I have with some folks at the farmers market. In our growing electronic indoor world, the disconnect with nature grows.
Because this book is geared towards kids, the information is very basic & leaves a whole lot about farming out. I'm not too crazy about that, because it's not a full education so to speak. The lessons are hit or miss. I'm sorry, but I'm not a fan of encouraging kids to use throw away goods to do projects. Books like 'The Unplugged Family' or 'The Organic Artist for Kids' are much more hands on utilizing honest to goodness natural products that will break down. Personally, I feel this is a much better way to learn. But hey, that's just me & most adults don't even know what chard is or that turkeys lay eggs, so well, you know. I find it really sad that this is the direction our world has taken.
I love the artwork in this book. Seriously. It's full of vibrant color & very appealing. It is probably my favorite thing about it. Five stars for that, four for the content.
Whatever you do, be sure that getting this book & doing a few projects & then forgetting about it isn't all that you do. If you can, visit a small local family farm. Let your kids get down & dirty. There is so much to learn at the farm =D When kids arrive at my little farm, they pretty much go out of their minds in the best way possible. I've even had some ball their eyes out when they leave. Kids need this.
